Identifying MSA products
Cartons of MSA eligible beef and sheepmeat cuts are identified by the two main features:
- Carton label information
- MSA Insert or printed packaging

Cut identification
The optional MSA descriptor after the cut name, identifies this product as MSA graded meat.
MSA eating quality identification
This product can be sold as MSA 3 star, or MSA Graded after 5 days ageing calculated from the packing date.
After 14 days ageing, this product can be sold as MSA 4 star.
Cooking methods
In this case, the recommended cooking methods are
- GRL – Grill
- RST – Roast
Ageing requirements
- Minimum 5 days
- Calculated up to 35 days for beef
- Ageing is calculated from the packed date on the label, where the packed date is counted as Day 1
- For this label, the product could be sold as MSA 3 on 14th November
Packed date
Ageing is calculated from the packed date stated on the label.
All MSA eligible and identified cuts must have:
- MSA generic food safe insert, or
- Brand specific MSA approved insert, or
- MSA pre-printed on packaging
In the absence of this identification, the product is not deemed to be MSA certified.
Portion cut products must include:
- MSA identification on or in the packaging
- Ageing requirements stipulated (if ageing has not been met prior to cutting)
